Why does Pinterest require me to sign in with Twitter or Facebook?

What are they going to do with linking to my accounts? How come I can not just sign up with an email address and not let Pinterest know my twitter and facebook?

So they can get your friend's information and increase their audience. The Internet is certainly a web and everything is more and more connected to each other.

It is just the way they do things. You could make a separate Twitter account for Pinterest, if you do not want to tie it with your main account.

Pinterest is a Social Networking site-just like Facebook and Twitter. It relies on other social networking sites for promotion. I wrote an article that explains Pinterest in detail if you are interested: http://jsmatthew.hubpages.com/hub/Using-Pinterest-

Hope this helps!

Oh, I found out that you only need to use Twitter or Facebook during signup. Once you have signed up, in your Pinterest settings, you can "unlink" them.
